CINEBEAT

Looking at how the wording can help users find what they want within the app and instantly give a sense of the app’s unique offerings.

1 - THE USER FLOW FOR SEARCH SCREENS

ROLE: UX WRITER

Creating an impactful movie search screen is paramount for this product. Users should be able to a) get a sense of the type of offerings Cinebeat provides, b) be able to quickly find items that pique their interest.

Looking at the first iteration below, it is apparent that several UX writing factors need to be developed and improved.

My feedback after this first iteration:

  • The top copy is generic and doesn’t inspire the user. Furthermore, given that the user has already clicked the Search icon, it is implicit that they are searching for films. This area could use copy that better instructs the users on how this feature works.

  • Is this a Search screen or a View Movies Offered section? Differentiate the two.

  • The “Search by Genre” section - What is the rationale for offering these types of sections versus other sections? When users join the app, they fill out a quiz portion to gauge their interests; therefore, it should specify as such in this section.

  • Regarding the Genre names, it is entirely possible that a user might not be acquainted with such a genre. A short description of each genre might be useful.

  • Currently there is no way for users to type in their own search term, but that is more of a UI/UX issue.

REDESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

  • Change top copy to better explain how the search screen operates.

  • Add Search section and a different View Movies section.

  • Don’t repeat the term “Search” so much - it is redundant.

  • Specify why these Genres are shown first (‘‘according to your preferences”)

  • Add short descriptions of Genres.

2 - THE REDESIGN

This updated content design features much more informative content and an easier navigation. Users can preview the qualities of each genre or explore other ways to search. Nevertheless, the screen could surely benefit from a few more minor tweaks.

IMPROVEMENT CONSIDERATIONS

  • It’s implicit that Search would be within Cinebeat, so “Search Cinebeat” is redundant and the title here is unnecessary given the icon used.

  • “Discover films…” should be at the bottom.

  • The description for Italian Neo-Realism is slightly too long and should be shortened by a word or two.

  • An Adjust Preferences link should be added.

3 - FINAL ITERATION

CONCLUSION

This final iteration is much more easy to navigate and informative than the first design. Users are able to learn more about suggested genres, make preferences modifications and easily search through other categories. The UX writing here assists the users by being clear and concise.
